Does Your Travel Policy Address the Safety Needs of Lone Travelers?

Lone travelers often have different safety needs from those required when employees are traveling as a group. Review your travel policy and ascertain whether the following requirements are stipulated in case a lone traveler is making hotel bookings.   24/7 Reception Desk Personnel. Lone travelers should book lodgings where the reception desk has a staff member during every hour of the day or night. This will allow the lone traveler to summon help quickly in case a safety incident, such as a break-in, occurs.   Hotel Location. Lone travelers should only stay at hotels which are located in areas that are considered safe, such as busy or vibrant parts of the city. This information can be obtained by visiting review sites and checking the location of the hotel on Google maps. Avoid staying at hotels in isolated locations since you may face greater safety risks in such locations.   Peep Holes. It is also advisable for lone travelers to book hotels whose room doors have one-way peep holes. In this way, your employee will be able to verify who is at the door before opening to let that person in.   A Secure Car Park. The parking lots at lodging facilities should be well lit at night. The parking lot should also be monitored electronically so that it is possible to identify anyone who leaves or approaches the hotel residences from the parking lot. These security measures can deter any opportunistic criminals who may have wished to target lone travelers. Incident investigations can also yield results quickly if such security arrangements are in place.   It may be hard for your in-house travel manager to perform an extensive due diligence on the different hotels or lodging facilities where employees wish to stay during their travels. It is therefore advisable to hire an experienced travel manager, such as Andrea Tsakanikas (President of CrewFacilities) so that your employees will only stay at vetted accommodation facilities which ensure that lone travelers will not be exposed to any avoidable safety risk.
